1970 The Causal Event

It all started in the spring of 1970, when I was 24.
I was a passenger in a Volkswagen. The steering failed, and the car veered off the road, rolling end-over-end once, and then sideways several times. Both the driver and I were ejected from the car.

At the time, the doctor told me I would have problems with my hip later in life. I felt better quickly. I knew I would live forever, and the doctor was clearly wrong.

I have been very active, especially during the last twenty years, hiking to the highest points in each of 43 states, plus DC, Mt. Fuji in Japan, and Huayna Picchu in South America. My hip has gradually become more troublesome, making it difficult or impossible to continue those activities.

Still, I managed to ski 5 times this spring.
